Dr. Carl DuPont, assistant professor at the Peabody Conservatory, will present an evening of art songs by Black composers for bass and baritone voice with pianist Dr. Gregory Thompson. Together they will demonstrate the connections spirituals, gospel music, and art songs by Black composers stylistically, while also showing where the song forms diverge into their own distinct genres. In addition to that, this program features Black female and male composers as well as 20th and 21st century composers, highlighting the developments in the Black American identity and the challenges that have remained constant. Intended as an intervention to what has become accepted as the traditional Eurocentric American recital, this performance brings rare and unjustly neglected works to the concert stage as part of Dr. DuPont’s research agenda focused on equity and inclusion in high music education.
